New building for the DLR SG Institute
The DLR has opened the new building for the Institute of Test and Simulation for Gas Turbines (DLR SG) at its Augsburg site.
The focus of the research work is on a “Virtual Engine” research and development platform and a unique test center for the validation of new engine technologies. Innovative testing facilities for materials and components were developed for the test center, which, among other things, can be used to investigate the complex interaction of mechanical, chemical, and thermal stresses.
But digital twins are not only used in the research focus areas. Digital methods were also used in the definition of the building and the test facilities. For example, OPM created a virtual model of the building, including all its rooms and the test center with its test benches, which enabled a virtual tour of the institute well before the opening, thus giving researchers the opportunity to optimize the test center according to their requirements.
What services did we provide?
Determination of user requirements using our URS requirements methodology for buildings and test benches
Integration planning and layout optimization
Creation of a scaled virtual model of all buildings, including test benches, during the requirement assessment phase
Preparation of tender documents for buildings and test facilities
Support in the strategic alignment of the implementation concept in the organizational and operational structure
Establishment of an agile project organization for the construction and operation of the test benches and the institute
Project management in accordance with the AHO (German Occupational Health and Safety Act) according to Sections 2 and 3
Contract management for the test facilities, interface management for layout planning
Support in the definition and implementation of the test benches by a subject-matter expert
What distinguished us? What were the particular challenges?
Our expertise in the planning of complex test centers for industry and research
Integration of turnkey (equipment) and public construction law (VOB and VO/F) (buildings)
Structuring of change management
OPM is proud to have been able to support DLR in the crucial initial phase by creating the URS (User Requirement Specification), thus helping to develop the research landscape.
